Children to benefit from OlympAfrica Amasaman Project in Ghana - if develoment hurdles are overcome in time

Olympafrica is one of the flagship programmes of ANOCA. It was designed with the goal of helping African youths to practise their favourite sport and share the values of Olympism
ACCRA, May 19, 2017 - Alassane Thieno Diack, Executive Director of the Fondation Internationale OlympAfrica who was in Ghana at the invitation of the President of the Ghana Olympic Committee (GOC) Ben Nunoo Mensah has expressed his desire to see the development and promotion of sports in Africa with the construction of sports facilities.

After visiting the propose site for an Olympic project in Ghana, Alassane Diack told journalists that initially there was a misunderstanding on the main purpose of the land.

He disclosed that while previous governments wanted support from the Olympic movement to construct an Olympic size stadium, that was not in the aims and objectives of the OlympAfrica who are interested in building a community sports complex for the youth and children.
According to Diack, because there was no agreement he had to come to Ghana in September, 2005 and again in 2013, yet nothing happened on the decision on the site.

He however commended the GOC President whom he met at the ANOCA Congress recently in Djibouti, and they talked over the project, which he followed up to see and meet government officials on how to put it into effective use.

He noted that the people of Amasaman are going to be the first beneficiaries and when it is put up, it must be maintained and taken good care of as it is the Olympic movement and sponsor’s money generated that must be accounted for.

He noted that a similar project is in Togo, managed by Tom Phillipo, the Regional Director of OlympAfrica, so construction could be similar with some developments, with the support of Togolese counterparts.

Alassane Diack, a keen Senegalese Track & Field fan noted that the philosophy behind the OlympAfrica Foundation is to develop community sports projects where the people will benefit directly as they participate in sports, noting that they are not looking at big champions, but the involvement and participation of the community to become good citizens.

“Children are very important, and it is ideal we do some projects for the development of kids and the community at large” he noted.
He said there are several benefits of sports which the people of Amasaman will enjoy in future.

Ben Nunoo Mensah said he was happy for the visit which also took him to the office of the Youth & Sports Minister, Hon. Isaac Asiamah.
The GOC President assured that other sources like GNPC and COCOBOD would be contacted to support the funding of the national project which would host an annual Under Aged 8-13years Sports Festival for basic schools and communities.
