LAUSANNE, November 8, 2017 - The best broadcast coverage of the Olympic Games Rio 2016 was celebrated on Tuesday evening in Lausanne as the IOC announced the winners of the prestigious Golden Rings Awards.
Awards were presented across six categories: Best Olympic Sports Production; Best Olympic Feature; Best Athlete Profile; Best On-Air Promotion; Best Olympic Digital Service; and Best Olympic Programme.
The winners of the night were Brazil’s SporTV – part of host broadcaster of Rio 2016 Globo Group - who picked up the award for Best Olympic Programme and a host of other recognitions while NBC of the United States went home with three Golden Rings for Best Olympic Feature, Best Olympic Profile and Best Olympic Digital Service.
The BBC picked up the award for the The Best On-Air Promotion for a unique build up to its Rio 2016 coverage that included Brazil’s diverse wildlife competing in Olympic disciplines.
AIPS President Gianni Merlo was a members of the international Golden Rings jury that was headed by IOC Member Anant Singh, a leading professional in the film and media industries, and a member of the IOC's Olympic Channel Commission.
IOC President Thomas Bach, who presented
the award for "The Best Olympic Programme", said: "Half the
world's population followed the Olympic Games Rio 2016, and there was more
television and more digital coverage than ever before. This clearly
demonstrates the continuing global appeal of the Olympic Games. Thanks to the
broadcasters that we are honouring tonight with the Golden Rings Awards, the
iconic Olympic moments and the athletes' achievements will live on forever in
our collective memory."
