“2017 was definitely my best season” – stated Federer himself in a recent interview to La Gazzetta dello Sport. His incredible season started earlier this year in Australia with his unespected triumph in Melbourne against Rafael Nadal in the fifth set.

After ten years Federer is again the AIPS Champion of the Year with 928 votes, just 140 votes ahead of FIFA Balon d’Or winner Cristiano Ronaldo, while Argentina and F.C. Barcelona’s Lionel Messi, is in third place with 530 votes.

BEST FEMALE ATHLETE 2017
For the fifth time. Serena Williams is the winner of the AIPS Best Female Athlete of the year poll in probably one of the most momentous years for the tennis superstar which culminated in the birth of her first daughter on September 1.
The 2017 Serena Williams season officially began with the start of the 2017 ASB Classic at the beginning of January: Williams entered the season as the number two ranked player while she was already pregnant. On January 28, 2017, Williams set a record for the most slams in the open era when she claimed her 23rd slam at the 2017 Australian Open against her sister Venus. Her comeback in the new season is surely one of the most attended by sports media and fans that will have the possibility to welcome back Serena tomorrow, December 30, 2017 at the Mubadala World Tennis Championship in Abu Dhabi.
The race for the AIPS Best Female Athlete of 2017 was also one of the closest yet, with just over 20 votes separating first place Serena Williams (651) from three-time Olympic champion swimmer Katinka Hosszú from Hungary, in second place with 631 votes. Third place went to the US track and field sprinter Allyson Felix, 2017 World bronze medalist at 400 meters.

LAUSANNE, December 29, 2017 – After ten years, ‘The King’ Roger Federer was voted the AIPS Best Male Athlete of 2017 for a fourth time – edging closer to Usain Bolt, who is the record holder with six ‘AIPS Ahtletes of the Year’ recognitions. The award for Best Female Athlete went to US tennis star Serena Williams: this is the result of the most international poll yet by the International Sports Press Association (AIPS), where a panel of 517 journalists from 112 countries voted for the Champions of 2017.
