MEXICO CITY, June 18, 2018 - The past four days has seen seemingly strange results being churned out at the FIFA World Cup 2018 in Russia with the most shocking of them all unfolding at the Luzhniki Stadium on Sunday afternoon.
Mexico showed reigning champions, Germany no respect as they pressed really hard and were duly rewarded with a historic 1-0 win. The outcome of a six-month master plan by coach Juan Carlos Osorio.
But Mexico’s magical victory could also be down to a grandma who stood in front of her television over 6,500 miles away from Moscow to do the sign of the cross on every player in El Tri’s starting IX before kick-off.
Her granddaughter, with the Twitter handle, @paolaa_janet tweeted the video after the match against Germany
saying: “I’m 100% convinced my grandma was the reason Mexico won.”
The celebrations afterwards was surreal such that they shook the earth in Mexico City. Seismologists at the country’s official earthquake authority reported an artificial earthquake at the exact time of Mexico’s goal
. Their monitoring systems detected ground movements on at least two sensors, recording an acceleration reading of 37m/second squared.
A quick counter saw Midfielder Hector Herrera drive a superb pass to the path of Javier Hernández, who eventually set up Hirving Lozano to cut inside and fire home.
There is surely no better way to start their World Cup campaign and it's left to see if Mexico can carry this form all the way. Next up for El Tri are Korea Republic and then Sweden.
