The VNL showcased a perfect blend of music and sport as part of its fan engagement strategy and the result was absolutely awesome. It brought to life the very essence of the volleyball anthem “Worlds Collide”, by Grammy award-winning Australian DJ duo, Nervo.
The twin sisters, Mim and Liv, born Olivia and Miriam in Ivanhoe, Australia, told AIPS in an interview: “We are constantly writing records - on the road, in the studio - and we wrote this song quite a few years ago and when we were speaking to the volleyball people they were like ‘girls we really want to incorporate music with sports’.
“So we didn’t finish it but we sent them a rough idea of a load of records and they picked this one (Worlds Collide) because obviously it’s an international sport and the song is uplifting, we think. Then we finished it off and they liked it, we love it. We are so happy that it has a home.”
The volleyball ambassadors are the world's foremost and highest-earning female Electronic Dance Music personalities, and they brought the fan experience at the VNL to an energetic climax when they transformed a packed volleyball arena to a dance hall prior to the start of the final between the hosts France and Russia.
Nervo’s collaboration with VNL was officially launched in June at the VNL pool matches in Ottawa, Canada and the global debut of their exclusive new track, “Worlds Collide” marked the occasion. They went on to perform at the women’s VNL Finals in Nanjing, China before concluding the tour with a brilliant performance at the men’s VNL Finals in Lille, France.
Although the experience is “completely different” from what they are used to at clubs and festivals, Nervo are already looking forward to next year’s VNL tour. They love how fans get involved in all the fun. “It’s just very engaging and exciting. It’s a lot of fun, we’ve gotten really into it,” Liv said.
Nervo, who played volleyball some years back in high school, are hoping that music and entertainment could be incorporated into all kinds of sports, and they believe that it would also help attract the younger generation.
Liv said: “I think the entertainment aspect of it is really exciting and maybe something a bit new for Europe. And I love it.”
Mim added, “It’s like when you go to Wimbledon, I love Wimbledon, but it’s not as much fun and crazy. This is the next level. I can see it catching on.”
From Ibiza to Las Vegas, Nervo have graced the biggest stages in the world. They co-wrote the Grammy-award-winning hit, "When Love Takes Over", performed by David Guetta and Kelly Rowland, and have produced club bangers for the likes of Kylie Minogue, Kesha, The Pussycat Dolls, Afrojack, Steve Aoki and Armin Van Buuren, in addition to having their own albums.
Maybe it is time to take entertainment in sports beyond just opening and closing ceremonies. At the VNL, it was party non-stop and it was hard to differentiate the losing fans from the winning fans.
