Der 33-jährige Niederösterreicher führte gegen Edouard Roger-Vasselin nach 69 Minuten mit 7:5,4:1, ehe der Franzose aufgeben musste. Melzer, der im Ranking auf Platz 124 zurückgefallen ist, trifft nun entweder auf den als Nummer 3 gesetzten Kanadier Milos Raonic oder den Australier Bernard Tomic.Sieben Erstrunden-Pleiten für MelzerMelzer hatte seit dem Hertogenbosch-Halbfinale im Juni nicht weniger als sieben Erstrunden-Niederlagen erlitten. Gegen Roger-Vasselin hatte er vor fünf Jahren an gleicher Stelle in drei Sätzen verloren. Diesmal gelang Melzer zum 7:5 das erste Break des Spiels, danach dauerte das Match nicht mehr lange. "Der erste Satz war eine richtige 'Battle'. Anscheinend hat er dann irgendwas in seiner Hüfte gespürt. Bis dorthin habe ich relativ wenig bemerkt", sagte Melzer gegenüber tennisnet.com zur Aufgabe des Franzosen.Im Achtelfinale wird es Melzer freilich schwerer haben, auch wenn er mit Raonic vom bisher einzigen Aufeinandertreffen gute Erinnerungen hat: Ein 7:5,7:6-Erfolg im Endspiel machte Melzer 2012 zum Memphis-Sieger. Gegen Tomic hat der Deutsch Wagramer bisher noch nie gespielt.
