BRUSSELS, December 16, 2014 - Thibaut Courtois was named Belgium’s 2014 Sportsman of the year during a lavish gala in De Panne. Courtois is the first footballer to win the trophy since it was created in 1967.
For the goalkeeper of Chelsea (and previously Atletico Madrid) and the Belgian national team, it was the icing on the cake after a year, in which he won the Spanish title with Atletico Madrid and reached the final of the Champions League.
22-year-old Courtois is also the undisputed goalkeeper of the Belgian Red Devils who reached the quarterfinals at the 2014 World Cup. Thibaut Courtois received 466 points in the vote. Tennis player David Goffin collected 449 points and speed skater Bart Swings came third with 193 points.

Heptathlete Nafissatou Thiam was crowned Sportswoman of the year. Thiam (20) clinched a bronze medal at the European Athletics Championships in Zürich. During the competition, Thiam crossed 1m97 in the high jump; the highest ever leap in combined events. Thiam was the overwhelming winner of the vote by nearly 200 professional sports journalists and former winners, with 527 points. World boxing champion Delfine Persoon came second with 416 points, with Evi Van Acker (sailing) finishing third with 205 points.

Football was the big winner of the night with Divock Origi elected as most promising athlete of the year, the Belgian Red Devils were voted Team of the year, and Marc Wilmots was again Coach of the year. Double world champion Michèle George is Belgium’s Paralympian of the year.
