The Belarus Olympic Committee normally holds annual traditional Christmas party for the children and grandchildren of Olympic medalists, coaches, sports veterans, well-known sports journalists-members of the Belarusian Sports Press Association. At this year's event there were about 200 children.
The event was marked by gala performance of Santa Claus and Snow Maiden, Bears Olympishka and fairy-tale characters among other dramatisations.
The children and grandchildren of Olympic champions Aksana Miankova, Yannina Provalinskaya-Karolchik, Alexander Medved, Alla Tsuper, Tatyana Ledovskaya, Antonina Koshel, Sergey Makarenko, Nikolai Alekhin, Leonid Taranenko, Boris Koretsky, Tatiana Beloshapko, Paralympic champion Lyudmila Volchek , medalists of the Games Liubov Cherkashina, Dmitry Daschinsky, Irina Il'enkova, Marina Znak and many others attended the celebration.
All children received gold medals and other gifts from the National Olympic Committee of the Republic of Belarus.
There were special guests at the party, children from the social shelter of the city Slutsky, which houses orphans. There was a special program for them. For instance 11-year old gymnast Ulyana Lemesh who now lives in a shelter for orphans, sent a letter to Santa in which she wrote that her dream was to meet her sports idol - the bronze medalist of the London 2012 in the Rhythmic Gymnastics Liubov Cherkashina. Her wish came true when she met the Olympic medalist near the Christmas tree.
“I wrote a letter that I wanted to meet and talk to Liubov,” said an elated Ulyana.
“She is my favorite athlete. And I really liked this party. At the National Olympic Committee I most like to look at the portraits in the Hall of Olympic Fame. Now I will train more hard to win a medal, too.”
“Ulyana three times came to me at training camp,” explained Liuba Cherkashina.
“But in the camp among the three hundred children it is difficult to pay attention to someone, and I'm also pleased that we were able to talk with the girl here, and I also spoke to the teachers. In fact for children in difficult life situations sport is very important.”
The children went to Slutsk in good spirits and bearing gifts from the NOC Belarus and the hockey club "Dynamo-Minsk".
