Neuer, Williams AIPS Best Athletes, Germany Best Team in 2014

LAUSANNE, December 29, 2014 - The results are in! Germany and Bayern Munich goalkeeper Manuel Neuer and US tennis star Serena Williams have been voted AIPS Best Athletes for 2014.

A panel of sports journalists from 91 countries voted in this year's poll.

World Cup champion and winner of the Golden Glove in Brazil Manuel Neuer has also won the Bundesliga and German Cup with Bayern Munich and has according to many, redefined the goalkeeper role in modern football. The German, who is also in the running for the FIFA Ballon d’Or, received 601 votes, followed by Swiss tennis star Roger Federer on 537 and Real Madrid’s Cristiano Ronaldo on 518.

Women

World No. 1 Serena Williams, continued her reign in 2014, with 7 titles, including the US Open and her fifth WTA Finals title, which ties her with legendary Stefi Graf. The US queen of tennis received 843 votes, ahead of Belorussian biathlete and 3 time medalist in Sochi Darya Domarcheva (483) and Norwegian cross-country skier Marit Bjørgen (473).

Best Team

Football dominated in our Best Team category yet again as the World Cup champions from Brazil, the national team of Germany, the resounding winners with 1562 votes, 1073 ahead of second placed Real Madrid. The Spanish team were winners of the Champions League and the recently concluded Club World Cup and received 489 votes. Third place went to the men’s Swiss national tennis team, winners of the Davis Cup (310 votes).

Best Press Facilities

The overall winner of the Best Press Facility Award was the FIFA World Cup in Brazil, having received 757 votes and praise from the majority of our colleagues. Second place went to the press facilities of the Sochi 2014 Winter Olympic Games (626 votes), while tennis classic Wimbledon came in third (438 votes).
