PARIS, March 2, 2015 – A new milestone in the world of sport journalism was set today at the Louvre Museum in Paris with the launch of the Sport Media Pearl Awards, managed by the International Sports Press Association (AIPS) and hosted by Abu Dhabi Media (ADM). The awards will recognise excellence and development in sports media.
The prestigious awards were unveiled at the Louvre Museum during the official opening of the 78th AIPS Congress. The Congress provides the perfect platform and occasion to celebrate the birth of a new international initiative in the sports media world with more than 300 delegates from 101 nations in attendance.
Gianni Merlo, president of AIPS, said: "This is a great opportunity to dignify our profession and to aim at being better practitioners."
The Sport Media Pearl Awards will recognise those who work behind the scenes and are essential for the development of sports. Innovation and experience will be awarded across nine different categories including writing, photography, audio, video, journalist weblog, and a social project dedicated to coverage of a sporting initative, which aims to better the lives of the less fortunate. This prize is called ‘Sport for a Better World‘.
There are also three special philanthropic categories, which are not open to submissions, that recognise different achievements: ‘A life in sport‘,‘Best app‘ and ‘Investigative reporting‘.
AIPS President Gianni Merlo said: “These Awards are very important, because in a difficult moment for our profession it is necessary to return the spotlight onto the value of our work. Sport means culture and these awards will help the public recognise the social value of sport journalism.
“It is especially significant for our association that the awards were announced in Paris, the birthplace of AIPS the peak body representing the international sports media, founded 90 years ago at the 1924 Paris Olympic Games. The Sport Media Pearl Awards represent a new platform for the celebration and development of sport media excellence along key industry practitioners and enthusiasts across the globe.”
“We thank Abu Dhabi Media for hosting this initiative, which will add something new to our world.”
As a well-known sport destination and cultural centre, the United Arab Emirates has a broad global profile for sports and major events. The innagural awards ceremony will be held in capital of the UAE, Abu Dhabi in December.
