MELBOURNE, November 16, 2007 – A new award category has been introduced for this year’s Telstra Athlete of the Year Awards.

The Outstanding Photograph of the Year will be announced by Athletics Australia on Sunday, December 2.

The short list features the work of two photographers, Mark Dadswell (Getty Images) and Michael Dodge (Herald Sun).

Mark Dadswell’s two images show the cream of Australia’s pole vaulters, Perth-based trio Paul Burgess, Kym Howe and Steve Hooker, taken in the months before the IAAF World Championships in Osaka. The setting: the shores of City Beach at sunset, and world champion Jana Rawlinson in dominant pose in the 400m hurdles heats at the IAAF World Championships in Osaka. Three days later, Rawlinson captured her second world crown.

Michael Dodge’s snaps are of Australian distance runner Craig Mottram in training at Falls Creek, Victoria.

Shot in the lead-up to his win in the 5000m championship race held at the Telstra A-Series (World Athletics Tour) meet in Melbourne on March 2, 2007, Mottram appeared in the Herald Sun that week; one of the images made it to the cover of the newspaper.
