ALGIERS, October 7, 2015 - On September 30, 2015, a journalist from the Algerian
daily ELKHABAR, Rafik Ouahid, was barred from covering the press conference announcing the selection of the Algerian national football team on the instruction of the
President of the Algerian Football Federation, Mr. Mohamed Raouraoua.
The journalist arrived at the conference in a timely
manner, but the communication officer of the governing body of the Algerian
Football Federation indicated clearly to him that he and another journalist
from a sports daily (competition), Smail Amokrane Mohamed, were banned from
attending the conference.
This serious matter unacceptably chips away the
right to information guaranteed by the Algerian and international law.
The Algerian Football Federation president’s lack of
respect for Algerian laws governing the right to information is unacceptable.
The Association of Sports Journalists of Algeria (AJSA) is outraged and has
voiced its objections. It is calling on the competent authorities to put a stop
to this actions bordering censorship and self-censorship. If the articles are
not appreciated, it is established by law to exercise one’s right to respond or
to take legal action in the case of proven defamation.
The initiator of this discriminatory measure against
the two professional journalists has prevented the free exercise of their
profession and violated their readers’ right to be informed. The AJSA is
calling on journalists to mobilize in order that acts such as these are
prohibited in the future.
