During its annual gala, the ALPS held a vibrant tribute to cyclist Charly Gaul, who had passed away on December 6, 2005, just two days ahead of his 73rd birthday.
The Tour de France winner of 1958 and double winner of the Giro d’Italia (1956, 1959) had been elected Luxembourg’s sportsman of the year in 1954, 1955, 1956 and 1959. At the end of 1999, the members of ALPS voted Charly Gaul sportsman of the century, just ahead of the Helsinki 1500m Olympic champion Josy Barthel.
Charly Gaul had attended the ALPS Sports Gala for the last time in 2002. Roger Denis reminisced about the country’s grandest sportsman ever and sang an emotional farewell song at the event.
