Moldovan journalists crown the Best of 2016

CHISINAU, December 22, 2016 The Sports Press Association of Moldova (APSM) concluded the year with the traditional ceremony honoring the most remarkable achievements of 2016.

The Gala was held on Monday, December 19 at Mi Piace, one of the finest event halls of the Moldovan capital city Chisinau.

APSM President Eduard Ciobanu opened the event by giving an overview of the major sport events of the last 12 months. President Ciobanu particularly highlighted the work undertaken to prepare the expected first edition of the first full-color sports magazine to be issued by the Association.

The Minister of Youth and Sport Victor Zubcu praised the importance of the press and their vital contribution to the promotion of sporting successes of Moldovan athletes. The ceremony was also attended by Secretary General of the National Olympic and Sports Committee Cristina Vasilianov and dozens of Presidents and other high officials of national sport federations.

Dragoș Hancu, Advisor to the Prime Minister of the Republic of Moldova, opened the festivities by awarding the Governmental Diplomas to APSM members who have made distinguished contributions to the development and promotion of sport and sport journalism in the country and beyond over the course of the last Olympic Cycle. The list of honorees includes: Alexandru Grecu, Serghei Lisevici, Ion Robu, Serghei Donets, Mihai Sandu and Radu Galbur.

Alexandru Spac (weightlifting) and Zalina Marghieva (athletics), both of whom placed 5th at the Rio Olympic Games were named the Athletes of the Year.

Judoca Denis Vieru, who became the European U-23 Champion in 2016, won the "Rising Star" trophy.

The beach soccer national team was named as the "Team of the Year".

Larisa Marinencova was awarded the "Sport of Equal Posibilities" trophy in recognition of her success at the Rio 2016 Paralympic Games, where she became 7th in powerlifting.

During the ceremony, APSM named 3 new honorary members who have made a significant contribution to the support of APSM: Igor Iuzefovici (President of the Taekwondo WTF Federation), Pavel Cebanu (President of the Football Federation) and Petru Jardan (vice-president of FC Milsami Orhei).

APSM also honored the best female sports journalists, laureates of media excellence award, veteran journalists and the winners of the multi-sport competitions held amongst APSM Members.

President Ciobanu also received a special prize for the sports journalists' football team, which he founded 20 years ago and which he is the captain of. Alexandru Grecu and Eduard Ciobanu were the only members of the original squad in attendance. Over the course of the years, the sports journalists national football team won numerous national and international tournaments. The list of honors over the years included, amongst others, the gold medals of Europe and, most recently, 3rd place at the Balkans.

Athletes and sports officials in attendance have once again praised the APSM Gala, which became one of the major highlights of the Moldovan sports award season, over the course Eduard Ciobanu's tenure in office.
