KAMPALA, February 2, 2017 - Special Olympics Uganda SOU is the local chapter of Special Olympics International (SOI) whose goal is to help persons with intellectual disabilities participate as productive and respected members of society at large, by offering them a fair opportunity to develop and demonstrate their skills and talents through sports training and competition, and by increasing the public's awareness of their capabilities and needs.
The Special Olympics are a sports program for persons with intellectual disabilities.
In order for the two parties to deliver their mandate as non-profit organizations working towards improving the livelihood of people with intellectual disability and sports professionals USPA may from time to time pursue the role of disseminating Special Olympics Uganda and the International program, cover SOU events (locally and international), provide reports on media performance, advice SOU on media dynamics and offer recommendations where necessary, The two parties will jointly promote each others program and embrace sustainability. USPA President Mr Sabiti Muwanga and General Secretary Mr Patrick Kanyomozi together with SOU Country Director Ms Genevieve Bamwidhukire signed the Memorundum of Understanding.
"These kids are amazing! Thank you Special Olympics Uganda (SOU) for taking care and showing Ugandans that after all, even those with mental disabilities can do something.
I am sure there are many out there who are like Kevin and Marvin here with us today but their kin don't know what to do. Some have even been abandoned (we see many wandering around especially in Kampala suburbs).”
USPA joins SOU in media advocacy, to highlight the plight of such individuals in Uganda and raise awareness among the general public. They need support", USPA president highlighted.
SOU Director Genevive said she is optimistic and that with this collaboration, the sky will be the limit. She also appreciated USPA for allowing to work with the group that had kids with special needs
