PUNTA DEL ESTE, April 20, 2017 - The 54th ODEPA - PASO Assembly will meet in Uruguay on April 25 and 26, at the Convention Center of Punta del Este.
The main resort of Uruguay will receive the participants and representatives of 41 American Olympic Committees.
The Assembly will also include the visit of Presidents of the Pan American and World Federations of different sports - that integrate the Olympic and / or Pan American program, such as Dr. Rafael Santonja, president of the International Federation of Bodybuilding and Fitness, and representatives of other five international federations. Between 300 and 350 leaders of the sport will arrive to Punta del Este.
The guest of honor will be the President of the International Olympic Committee (IOC), Thomas Bach, who confirmed his presence. Eleven years after the visit of Jacques Rogge, another IOC President will be present at an ODEPA Assembly. Bach will arrive together with Sheikh Ahmad Al Fahad al-Sabah, current President of the World Association of National Olympic Committees (ANOC) and President of Olympic Solidarity.
In anticipation of future events, officials from organizing committees from Peru, Argentina and Japan will be presenting the preparations and the development of events such as the Pan American Games Lima 2019, the Youth Olympic Games Buenos Aires 2018 and the Olympic Games of Tokyo 2020, respectively.
Also the cities aspiring to organize the Pan American Games of 2023, Buenos Aires and Santiago de Chile, will have the opportunity to make a presentation of their projects to the delegates of PASO.
On the morning of the 26th, the election of the new President of ODEPA-PASO, successor of Dr. Julio Maglione, will be carried out, who has declined to run for re-election for the position. Of the five candidates who emerged earlier this year to take the presidency, there are three. Those who left in the race for the main chair were Neven Iván Ilic, President of the Chilean Olympic Committee; Keith Joseph, of Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, current vice-president of PASO; Richard Peterkin of Saint Lucia former ODEPA treasurer José Joaquín Puello of the Dominican Republic and Carlos A. Nuzman of Brazil.
In the last two years, under the chairmanship of Dr. Maglione, ODEPA, $50 million has been distributed among Pan American athletes, to improve the infrastructure and functioning of the Olympic Committee and to conduct social projects in cooperation with governments. AIPS will be represented by Executive Committee member Ernesto Ortiz.
