DOETINCHEM, July 16, 2017 - Nils Nielsen's Denmark won for the first time at the UEFA Women's EURO after a sixth-minute goal from midfielder Sanne Troelsgaard defeated tournament newcomers Belgium.

Doetinchem's Stadion De Vijverberg was dressed up with flags of both teams as thousands of Danish and Belgian supporters enjoyed the football party and encouraged their players from kickoff to final whistle.

Denmark commanded the first half with a more technical style than the Belgians and struck after only five minutes.

Captain Pernille Harder's free kick was tipped against the bar by goalkeeper Justien Odeurs and Troelsgaard headed home the rebound.

Belgium battled in pursuit of an equaliser in vain, with Tessa Wullaert off target in the closing minutes of the first half.

Denmark also missed an opportunity to score a second goal two minutes before the break.

Belgium were better than Denmark in the second half. Elke Van Gorp and Julie Biesmans created problems on the wings but the Danish defense was alert to the danger.

Ives Serneels's team deserved a draw and, in the last minutes, had clear chances to equalise and Davinia Vanmechelen hit a post in the climax to an exiting match.
