Following the World Press Briefing, on 8th and 9th September the
Tokyo Metropolitan Government will organise a free optional media
tour of Miyagi and Fukushima prefectures, both of which were hit by
the March 2011 great earthquake and tsunami. This tour will
give media organisations a chance to observe first-hand how the
disaster-affected areas in Tohoku have been recovering, focusing on how
the power of sport played a role in society.
Masa Takaya, Tokyo 2020 Spokesperson, commented: “Every time I visit the
region, I am always impressed with the area’s recovery. People who I
know in Tohoku often tell me that the Olympic and Paralympic Games Tokyo
2020 are their immediate dream, helping to give them renewed value of
life in many ways. These words are really encouraging. And today, we are
even more determined to deliver a successful Games, bringing the power and
energy of the Games to every corner of the nation.
“Tokyo’s media tour initiative will be a great opportunity for the
international press to discover how the areas are recovering and how
sport and athletes have played crucial roles in the recovery
efforts. Indeed, Japan’s sports communities and athletes themselves
rediscovered the role of sport in society, as they have been
proactively participating in those efforts for the past seven years.
We hope that many WPB participants will use the additional days to
visit Tohoku and learn the region’s story through a vivid demonstration of
the power of sport.”
