LAUSANNE, May 15, 2018 – The just concluded 81st AIPS Congress which was staged in Brussels, Belgium from May 7-10 adorns the cover page of the latest edition of the AIPS Magazine which is now available online. Issue I/2018 projects the programme of the Congress with emphasis on the digital future of sports journalism.

AIPS Sport Media Awards: The awards which were launched at the PyeongChang 2018 Winter Olympic Games in February remains a centre of attention for sports journalists across the world. A few pages of the magazine are dedicated to this platform which is aimed at celebrating sports storytellers. They outline basic information about the awards in three languages; English, French and Spanish and answer frequently asked questions. Also captured in the 67-page magazine is the promotion tour of the awards across every continent as well as articles - featuring sports journalists - that promote sport media excellence.

The World Cup and VAR: As the FIFA World Cup in Russia draws ever closer, there are lessons for every sports journalist to heed and these are well documented. Ahead of the global showpiece, the Video Assistant Referee System has been the talk of the town albeit in a controversial way and in April, AIPS witnessed the penultimate FIFA Referee Seminar in Coverciano which focused strongly on VAR.

North Korean Sports Press Association to renew membership with AIPS: During the PyeongChang 2018 Winter Games in February, AIPS President Gianni Merlo met with the Minister of Sports of the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea, Kim II Guk to discuss the country’s return to the international body that is responsible for sports journalism and sports journalists.

Elections: Some national associations conducted their elections in March. Yannis Theodorakopoulos was re-elected president of the Greek Sport Journalists Association for a new three-year term. The Circle of Sports Journalists of Uruguay chose Ernesto Ortiz Gomez as the institution’s new president. The Belgian Professional Association of Sports Journalists appointed Dominique Delhalle as its new president.

Many more stories can be found inside the AIPS magazine thanks to contributions from our National Associations, Commissions and Continental Sections.
