TORONTO, October 30, 2008 - The 13th Annual Sports Media Canada Achievement Awards were presented in the Ballroom of the Royal York Hotel in Toronto before an audience of 300 made up largely of familiar faces from Canadian sport and sports media, including members of Canada's Beijing Olympic team.
It was the first time that George Gross, co-founder of the Awards with Sports Media Canada Executive Vice-president Don Goodwin, was not on hand to congratulate the Award recipients. George, who died earlier this year, will be forever associated with the awards.
The crystal trophies presented to each Award recipient will henceforth be known as George Gross Awards.
Two Lifetime Achievement Awards were presented - one to Brian McFarlane former Hockey Night in Canada commentator and author of several books on hockey and the other to Bob Elliott the baseball columnist of the Toronto Sun daily newspaper and author of books on baseball.
The George Gross Award for Outstanding Sportswriting was presented to Dave Stubbs of the Montreal Gazette; for Outstanding Sports Broadcasting to Ron MacLean of the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation and for Outstanding Sports Photography to Lucas Oleniuk of the Toronto Star.
The Sports Executive of the Year Award was presented to George Gillett the owner of the 100-year-old Montreal Canadiens, storied original franchise of the NHL.
