Gaza - The Head of the Palestinian Olympic Sports Union announced the death of Khalil al-Jaber Hassan, president of the Futsal Federation, and his wife on Wednesday evening at their home in the North of the Gaza Strip when a shell landed on the Iqtnaha apartment. Mowaffaq al-Matar, a known journalist and writer who lives next to Khalil al-Jaber al-Hassan, said that on the evening of Wednesday, there was heavy shelling of Israeli tanks stationed in northern Gaza Strip. Two shells landed in his apartment, that caught fire and sent residents rushing to seek help. Upon checking the houses it was found that Mr. Hassan and his wife were killed and were taken to Shifa Hospital in Gaza.
The General Jibril Rajoub, head of the Palestinian Olympic Committee, accounced the death of Mr. Hassan who has served the sport movement for more than 30 years.
Nabil Al-Mabrouk, a friend and his colleague, said Mr. Hassan was the best ambassador for the sport due to a number of credentials such as being a graduate of sport culture in 1968 and the first member of the Palestinian Olympic Committee.
He served several positions including Vice-President of the Palestinian Track and Field in the early eighties with the return of the Palestinian National Authority to home and worked as secretary of the Union of the Palestinian Track and Field, was the head of several delegations in athletics and a member of the Palestinian delegation at the Olympics in Athens. He worked to serve the Palestinian sports and athletic sports in particular.
