The Albanian Sport Press Association (ASPA) under the auspices of its members Vladimir Grillo and Dëfrim Methasani organized a commemorative evening in honor of the renowned soccer radio reporter, the late Dr Frederik Fico.
Dr Fico was one of Albania’s most popular radio reporters and his commentary was heard ever since the first radio report was broadcasted in the country in 1938. A winner of the Anton Mazreku National Award in sports journalism in 2004, he was best known for his live soccer reporting on radio and recently on Albanian National Television, creating his own school of reporting, followed by many of the younger generation.
A medical doctor by profession, and one of the best-known dermatologists in the country, he was posthumously awarded Honorary Citizenship of his hometown, Gjirokastra, in recognition of his parallel careers in medicine and journalism.
During the event held at the Academy of Science, participants spoke at length about Dr Fico’s life and professional career. They included Professor Neritan Ceka, an Albanian MP, the veteran radio reporter Ismet Bellova, ASPA Secretary General Vladimir Grillo and others, thus making a journey through the history of the Albanian radio sports chronicle over the last 25 years, which is remarkably complimented by Dr Fico’s contribution.
An ASPA plaque to acknowledge Dr Fico’s extensive contribution to the development of sports radio journalism in Albania was presented to his widow, Mrs Marjeta Fico by ASPA President Besnik Dizdari. A TV documentary featuring the beloved commentator’s life was produced by Dëfrim Methasani of Telesport and was shown to the audience.
