One of the most important obligations of Azerbaijan to the Council of Europe was the formation of a public television and radio channel as a demonstration of openness to democratic reform. This obligation was honored one year ago with the first broadcast by Public Television.
Since that very first broadcast Public Television has managed to top the viewer ratings, not an easy achievement in such a short time.
The success is due to a core of hard working and creative people who have been able to provide a service to the public in an environment free of overt government control. ITV’s broadcasts have captured a large amount of viewer interest, with programming focusing on sport, including live presentations of both local and international sporting events.
The rise of sport reflects the rapid progress being made in Azerbaijan. The country’s President Ilham Aliyev supervises the National Olympic Committee and through his patronage many sporting venues, facilities and Olympic complexes are being constructed, not only in the capital Baku, but in the regions.
Azerbaijan has hosted numerous European and World Championships with great success.
The Azerbaijani sportsmen are becoming more dominant each year in sports such as boxing, Greco-roman wrestling, taekwondo, volleyball, and gymnastics.
Azerbaijan is considering proposing its candidacy to host 2016 Summer Olympic Games. All of these events and issues provide rich topics for the local media and the ITV has a prominent position in broadcasting the success.
Staff at ITV formed a football team. On the anniversary of ITV the new team met with the veterans of “Neftchi” football team and was cheered on by a large number of journalists and professionals.
The president of the Azerbaijan Sport Journalists Association, Eldar Ismayilov attended the celebration in honor of the Public Television and Radio Company’s first anniversary. He has presented a letter of congratulations from AIPS President Gianni Merlo and an AIJA Honorary Diploma to the head director of the company Ismayil Omarov.
Mr Omarov noted that the Azerbaijan Public Television and Radio Company is eager to foster friendship relations and cooperation with the AIJA and AIPS.
