SHENZHEN, August 15,2011- The Senegalese team of six athletes are gearing up for the track and field competition begins on Tuesday August 16.
The team of two boys and four girls, Senegal has set their target in bettering the medal haul from 2009 when they won a gold medal in the 400m, silver in Long Jump and Bronze in women's 4 by 400m.
"We have medal chances with our athletes. Our goal is to do better in 2009 in Belgrade, where we had won three medals including one gold, one silver and one bronze, "said Leopold Senghor Germain, the secretary general of the union of school and university sports associations (UASSU) of Senegal.
Mamadou Gueye will compete in the long and triple jump while Amadou Ndiaye will compete in the 200m and 4x400m. The 4x400m relay team will be led by Mame Fatou Faye, accompanied by Fatou Diabaye, Mariétou Badji and Fatoumata Diop. Gueye was all bubbly ahead of the start of the track and field event.
“I am optimistic because my target is to make the final. I am just recovered from a knee injury but I feel good now. I am using this event to prepare for the All African Games in September where I also plan to get a medal,” said Gueye the jumper.
Senegalese athletes will enter the fray on Tuesday.
