Incredible: Nastassia has lost the long jump gold and $60,000 dollars because of a hairstyle
The ponytail flying behind her - Natsassia Mironchyk-Ivanova misses out of her golden dreams. Photo/RAI

By Gianni Merlo, La Gazzetta dello Sport
DAEGU, September 3, 2011 - Nastassia Mironchyk-Ivanova, the pretty 22-year-old Byelorussian should take heed and think about changing her hairdresser.

Why? Just look at what her hairstyle, a long ponytail  has robbed her of…. In her third attempt in the long jump final Nastassia executed the best jump of her green career. Upon landing her body has left a trace on the sand that could guarantee her a measure of about 6.90, as is possible to understand by photographic evidence, and that measure would certainly have given her the Gold medal and a nice $60,000 cash prize.

But she could not have imagined that her swinging ponytail hitting the sand could have left a mark that would cancel all her dreams. Thanks to RAI technician Luca Fedrigo we found the right image – he was the first to realise that something was not quite right with the hair. From the tribune there were some protests because they could not see the ever-so-small indentation left by the ponytail, but the judge has made the right decision.

Nastassia has lost the gold, silver and the bronze and came fourth with a jump of 6.74.

This is the craziest thing that has ever happened at a world championships!

It is absolutely correct to measure the first part of your body that lands nearest the take off. If hair didn't count people would be arguing that it was their hair that made the indent not their hand, foot, bottom etc. Nothing stupid about it just common sense. Having said that I don't suppose many women would consider that their hair my make a mark so its simply a case of learn from this poor unfortunate.

That hurts ! It is one of the stupids things i ever seen. But in high jump if hairs bring town the (i dont know by english word for that) post then she did not jump over it and same stroy with longjump but still stupid and it hurts :)

That is so stupid! Why not have somebody standing by the sandpit and clamp in on any body they don't like!
Rules in every event is rubbish!

I remember Francesco Panetta, who got silver in Rome 1987, because Italian officials showed one lap to few for chaser group.

Rome 2007 Salim Sdiri got hitten by javelin, because Italian officials arranged long jump too near.

Craziest thing ever at world championships?

I'm old enough to remember someone called Giovanni Evangelisti.
