VIENNA, November 21, 2011 - Two times world champion Elisabeth “Lizz” Goergl (Alpine Skiing) and Thomas “Morgi” Morgenstern (Ski Jumping) are Austria’s athetes of the year 2011.

Lizz earned 126 of 240 possible first rankings, Morgi 125.

The best team was also voted by the members of Sports Media Austria – the title yet again going to the ski jumping team. They beat the team of Nordic combination who had 71:56 points.

The winners were presented at the big “Lottery gala night of sport” in Vösendorf near Vienna. Dr. Heinz Fischer, President of the Republic of Austria, attended the gala event.

“I am a sport lover”, said Fischer in his address to the 1500 people in the hall and in a ORF (Austrian broadcasting company) live TV coverage.

“I like soccer, tennis and walking in the alps. This year I have been to the highest point in Austria, at the Großglockner at 3798 meters above sea level”, added the President who will be at the opening ceremony of the 75th AIPS congress 2012 in Innsbruck next January.

The voting of the Austrian athletes this year was held in spring with athletes from the Winter sports dominating the awards. In the ladies category three alpine skiers took the first three places with Goergl Marlies Schild and Anna Fenninger taking second and third.

In the men's category Snowboarder Benjamin Karl finished second behind Morgenstern, and third was also a winter sport man – ski jumper Gregor Schlierenzauer.

Only one non- winter sport team made the podium: the formula 1 Red Bull Racing Team was third.
