From TOKYO 2020

TOKYO 28 Nov. 2011 - Tokyo 2020, Japan's bid team to host the 2020 Olympic and Paralympic Games, today received a huge boost with the establishment of the Tokyo 2020 Council, a premium advisory board consisting of 64 members. Current prime minister of Japan, Yoshihiko Noda, serves as Supreme Advisor of the Council, which also includes other key government figures and leaders from Japan’s business and sporting communities.

The inaugural Council meeting was convened at the Tokyo Metropolitan Government building on 28 Nov., with all members in wholehearted agreement to exert their utmost efforts to provide all necessary support and advice to Tokyo’s bid to host the 2020 Olympic and Paralympic Games.

Addressing the Council, Tsunekazu Takeda, Tokyo 2020 President, Japanese Olympic Committee President and former Olympian, expressed his gratitude to the members for their enthusiastic support for Tokyo’s bid. He added, “I am certain that the establishment of the Council, which is comprised of so many prominent figures from Japan’s political, business and sporting communities, will send a clear message to the International Olympic Committee that the whole of Japan is united in its efforts to ensure that Tokyo’s bid for the 2020 Games is successful.”

“Staging the Olympic and Paralympic Games in 2020 would serve as a major motivating force for the Japanese sporting community and act as a catalyst for the regeneration and reinvigoration of Japan, and particularly in those areas so severely affected by the recent disaster. As President of the Japanese Olympic Committee, I can also offer you my fullest
assurance that the JOC will be proactive on the international stage and do everything within its power to convince the members of the International Olympic Committee that Tokyo is optimal choice to host the Games of the XXXII Olympiad in 2020.”

Takeda also noted that Tokyo 2020 had earlier convened its third executive board meeting, and that the board had unanimously agreed with the appointment of key members of the Tokyo 2020 Council. Governor of Tokyo, Shintaro Ishihara, serves as Chairman of the Council, while the four Vice Chair posts are taken by former Prime Minister and long-time advocate for sports, Yoshiro Mori, Chairman of the Japan Economic Federation, Hiromasa Yonakura, Chairman of the Japan Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Tadashi Okamura, and Tokyo 2020 President and JOC President, Tsunekazu Takeda.

Other prominent Council members include former official with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Kazuo Ogura, who will serve as the Council’s Secretary General, and former head of the Sports and Youth Bureau, Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology, Nobumoto Higuchi, who assumes the post of Vice Secretary General.
