First Iraqi woman voted to head a sports club
Dr. Thuria Najim becomes the first woman to chair an Iraqi club.

BAGHDAD, April 23, 2012 - Last week’s elections of the Al-Elum (Science and Technology) sports club introduced Dr. Thuria Najim as the first woman to chair an Iraqi club.

The newly founded club has chosen its Board of Directors in elections witnessed the participation of more than 150 members, Dr. Najim, having won 118 votes out of 132 voters became the first woman to chair a club’s board of directors in the history of sports in Iraq.

The elections which were supervised by the Ministry of Youth and Sports raised the number of clubs that held their elections to 254 with men largely dominating the presidency race.

Dr. Najim, a currently Parliament member writes some sports reviews and articles in several Iraqi newspapers.

The elections saw Khadim Eyal Hamdan winning the Vice President post.

Anwar Ashraf, Tahsein Ali, Hisham Al-Salman, Emad Al-Shattie, Sabah Khasim, Shaker Mahmoud and Hazem Hussein were voted in as members while Emad Khadhim Abed won a reserve place.

The Science and Technology Club was founded on 26 May 2011 and includes five teams in football, futsal, wrestling, squash and boxing.
