BRASILIA, September 21,2012 - Brazil’s Federal Government assured its support to the renovation and upgrade of Rio de Janeiro’s Doping Control and Technology Development Support Laboratory (LABDOP/LADETEC, as in the original name’s acronym), and to the establishment of the Brazilian Doping Control Authority (ABCD, also as in the original name’s acronym), two commitments made during the city’s bid to host the 2016 Olympic and
Paralympic Games.

The announcement was made in Brazil’s capital Brasilia last Wednesday after a meeting of the Games Council, a group formed by the Rio 2016 Organising Committee for the Olympic and Paralympic Games (Rio 2016™) and the three levels of government with responsibilities in delivering the event (federal, state and city).

The meeting was attended by the President of Brazil, Dilma Rousseff; the Governor of the State of Rio de Janeiro, Sergio Cabral; the Mayor of the City of Rio de Janeiro, Eduardo Paes; the Minister of Sport, Aldo Rebelo; the President of Rio 2016, Carlos Arthur Nuzman; the President of the Olympic Public Authority (APO as in the original name’s acronym), Marcio

Fortes; and the Organising Committee CEO, Leonardo Gryner.

Carlos Arthur Nuzman said: “The Games Council meeting once again attested the unconditional support of the three levels of government to the Rio 2016 Olympic and Paralympic Games. We were also delighted to hear that President Dilma Rousseff will prioritise the efforts to renovate and upgrade LADETEC and to set up ABCD.”

LABDOP/LADETEC is the only laboratory in South America with World Anti-doping Agency (WADA) accreditation. One of Rio’s bid commitments was its renovation and upgrading so that it can meet the doping control needs of the Rio 2016 Games.

The government will also prioritise the establishment of ABCD, by outlining its roles and appointing key positions. Created last year as a Ministry of Sport’s agency, the authority complies with the bid commitment and meets one of WADA’s requirements.
