AIPS AMERICA: YARISLEIDIS CIRILO DUBOIS AND RONALD ACUÑA
AIPS America named the canoeist Yarisleidis Cirilo Dubois and the baseball player Ronald Acuña as the best athletes of 2023. The Mexico women's football team and the press facilities at Santiago 2023 Pan American Games were also chosen as the best in their respective categories.
Yarisleidis Cirilo Duboys: The 21-year-old Cuban canoeist stood out at the 48th World Canoe Championships, in Duisburg, Germany, becoming the first Cuban to achieve first place in an event of this category. She won the gold medal in the C1-200m test and got her direct qualification to Paris 2024, where she will also participate in the C2-500m event. She also won the gold at the Santiago 2023 Pan American Games.
Ronald Acuna: The Venezuelan, who plays for the Atlanta Braves, became
the first player to hit 40 home runs and steal 70 bases in a single season in MLB history. He was also MVP.
Mexico Women's Football Team: The Mexicans won the gold medal at Santiago 2023, for the first time, after beating Chile 1-0. María Sánchez shared first place as top scorer with 4 goals.
Santiago 2023: The 2023 Pan American Games in Santiago, Chile, won the award for best press facilities. The MPC was a good place to work as it was equipped with all that was necessary for a great media coverage. The press rooms at the competition venues also provided good services. The MPC had a capacity for 340 journalists. The photographers received help from Canon.
NOVAK DJOKOVIC AND AITANA BONMATI BEST IN EUROPE
For the fourth time in his career, the world's No.1 in tennis during 2023, Serbian Novak Djokovic was chosen as the European Sportsman of the Year by journalists from 43 AIPS Europe National Associations. This is Djokovic's fourth time chosen as the European Sportsman of the Year throughout his career after his victories in 2011, 2012 and 2015.
Novak Djokovic was followed by the Swedish Athlete Armand Duplantis winner of the 2022 edition and Norwegian Erling Haaland who had a great season with Manchester City F.C.
The Spanish football player Aitana Bonmati, who won the 2023 European Sportswoman of the Year award for the first time in her career, was followed by Polish tennis player Iga Swiatek and Netherlands athlete Bol Femke.
As the biggest continental section of AIPS, established in 1977 at the AIPS Congress in Milano Marittima and since 2003, the annual poll was named the Frank Taylor Trophy in honour of the former president of both AIPS and UEPS.
