MSJA organises seminar dedicated to women in sports
media
By Stephen Azzopardi The Malta Sports Journalists Association organised its first ever seminar totally focused on women involved in the sports media industry: “Training Women Sports Journalists and Reporters to Work More at Ease in the Sports Media Industry”.
This seminar involved various speakers, including Dr Zsuzsa Csisztu who is a renowned sports journalist in Hungary. She’s also a sports lawyer, Vice President of the Hungarian Sports Journalists Association and one of the AIPS’ Vice Presidents.
Being one of the first women to present football programmes in Hungary, she shared the difficulties she encountered when she became part of the sports media sector including intimidations and verbal attacks. Earlier, Joanna Camilleri from TVMSport shared the challenges she met in her career as an athlete and as a sports journalist. MSJA’s General Secretary Lorraine Cunningham also made her speech. She was one of the first women in the local media in the beginning of the 90’s.
There was also panel discussion involving TVM- Sport’s Janice Briffa, Freelancer and Uefa’s Venue Operations Broadcast Manager (VOBM) Catherine Micallef and Vicky Licari who is a former sports jour- nalist at PBS.
Hon. Julia Farrugia Portelli, Minister for Inclusion, Voluntary Organisations, and Consumer Rights, also attended the event and gave a speech.
The seminar came to an end with speeches from AIPS Europe President Charles Camenzuli and MSJA President Sandro Micallef.

Moldovan Sports Press Association honours excellence at year-end gala
By Natalia Donets On December 28, 2023, the Moldovan Sports Press Association gathered at the refined Italian restaurant Mi Piace for its traditional end-of-year gala. The event was a celebration of Moldovan sports excellence, recognising the achievements of athletes and sports journalists who have made remark- able contributions to the field in 2023.
The highlight of the evening was the presentation of excellence diplomas to the best sports journalists of the year. These professionals were honoured for their dedication and outstanding coverage of Moldovan sports throughout the year, bringing the excitement of athletic competition to audiences across the country. In addition to honoring journalists, the Association also recognized outstanding athletes who have excelled
on the international stage. Wrestler Anastasia Nichi- ta and judoka Denis Vieru were named the Best Ath- letes of 2023, cementing their places as superstars in Moldovan sports.
The gala also highlighted the promising future of Moldovan sports, with the recognition of rising stars in the young talents category. Greco-Roman style wrestler Alexandru Solovei and canoeist pair Daniela Cociu and Maria Olarasu were honoured for their outstanding performances in 2023.
Finally, the Moldovan National Football Team was recognized as the Team of the Year.

Circle of Sports Journalists
of Paraguay organises 20th National Sports Journalism Congress
The 20th National Sports Jour- nalism Congress in Paraguay took place from November 30 to December 2 in Luque. The event, organised annually by the Circle of Sports Journalists of Para- guay (CPDP), featured insightful speeches from prominent media and sports personalities.
The programme began on Thurs- day evening at the headquarters of the Paraguayan Olympic Com- mittee (COP) with journalist and lawyer Andrés Riquelme sharing his rich experience..
On Friday, the auditorium of the Paraguayan Football Association (APF) hosted a discussion titled Women in Sports Journalism, led by journalist Ondina Cantero. Other highlights of the day were the discourse on current football news by Nery Pumpido, CONME- BOL deputy general secretary for football and director of develop- ment, the COP president Camilo Pérez López Moreira speaking on everything related to Olympic sports and a speech by Enrique Sánchez, member of the APF Ex- ecutive Committee.
The last day featured conversa- tions with veteran sports media personalities, first with journalist Arturo Máximo Rubín and then with commentator Benicio Martín- ez. The president of Paraguay’s Interior Football Union (UFI), Óscar Ramírez, spoke about The Reality of Interior Football before the Con- gress concluded with participants receiving certificates.
