 FIBA
Sensational eFIBA Season 2 as USA crowned inaugural World Champions
The USA signed off a stellar eFIBA Season 2 by being crowned inaugural champions of the World Finals after they beat France in the first ever in-person eFIBA LAN event.
Taking place at the prestigious DreamHack Winter 2023 in Jonkoping, Sweden, the eFIBA Season 2 World Finals captured the imagination of some 45,000 attendees at the gaming and lifestyle festival.
It was a fitting end to a stunning eFIBA Season 2 – one that witnessed 61 participating teams across seven regions. The Finals came after six weeks of online Qualifiers, followed by Regional Finals. In total, eight nations punched a ticket to the first of its kind World Finals.
As champions, USA took the biggest share of the €50,000 prize pool, while Türkiye took the third podium step over the Philippines, with Morocco, Brazil, New Zealand, and Lebanon finishing in 5th to 8th place, respectively. FIBA first introduced its esports basketball competition in 2020, and since then, the discipline has grown in stature across the world and the distinctiveness of eFIBA continues to attract plenty of attention and praise. This has enabled FIBA to take a leading role among International Federations by connecting national teams to the esports community and facilitating an elite international competition calendar. FIBA joins the short list of other International Federations in taking a leading role among International Federations by connecting national teams to the esports community and facilitating an elite international competition calendar.
Also, FIBA’s active engagement with the International Olympic Committee (IOC), participating in the Olympic Virtual Series and Olympic Esports Week in Singapore, and the IOC Esports Commission, showcases its commitment to driving innovation and collaboration.
Meanwhile, the strategic partnership between FIBA, NBA 2K League, and 2K is unprecedented in the esports ecosystem. The goal was always to co-exist with the NBA 2K League calendar and players around the world now have incredible opportunities to play.
Additionally, the simulation of NBA 2K for basketball is particularly distinctive in team esports. The ProAm mode mirrors real basketball, with the synergies genuinely remarkable and something many sports are unable to replicate.
The evolution of eFIBA to a hybrid format has also been key, with what began as an online initiative now combining LAN stages. This dynamic competition system adapts to the realities of each region, introducing innovations such as skill boosters.
While the highs of the eFIBA Season 2 World Finals are to be celebrated, the success of eFIBA is also immersed in the groundwork and preparation that was done for the all-important Season 1, which was played at the start of the year in 2023.
This included an essential partnership with ESL Faceit Group (EFG), which provided essential resources, unique know-how, and experience that was crucial for the development and sustainability of an esports property. This also assisted with the
crucial launch of the eFIBA brand.
The growth of eFIBA has also been boosted by a non-exclusive and live stream-based distribution strategy. This has leveraged the followership of co-streamers and NBA 2K content creators who are active throughout the year, allowing for exponential reach and visibility.
A collaborative platform also listens to the community at every step and there is a huge appetite to seek out innovations that will establish eFIBA as an even more entertaining product.
Developed outside FIBA’s commercial program, eFIBA has also maintained flexibility in engaging potential partners to develop events and connect with the community.
Now engaging over 70 countries, eFIBA has positively contributed to FIBA’s strategic aim to ‘Enlarge the FIBA Family’ by creating a diverse and competitive basketball gaming community worldwide and will now look to further enhance the competition by developing and implementing a global eFIBA strategy.
An even more exciting eFIBA future lies in wait and it will now play a central role in helping to achieve a new FIBA strategic objective around ‘Sustainability and Innovation’ during the next four years.
